Online Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy

November 29, 2013

Caribbean Stud Poker is a game offered in the Table Games category at online casinos. It is a simple game, but involves both luck and skill. Therefore players need to be aware of the optimum strategy if they want good returns in the long run.

The player first places the ante wager. He is then dealt a hand of five cards face up. The dealer is also dealt a hand of five cards, but only one card is face up. The player now has to decide whether to fold or raise. If he folds then he will lose the ante bet and the game will be over. If he raises then he will have to place a second wager that is double the ante wager. The remaining cards of the dealer’s hand are then exposed and the hands compared according to the usual poker hand rankings. The dealer must have an ace and a king or better to qualify. If the dealer fails to qualify the player is paid even money on the ante wager and the second wager pushes. If the dealer qualifies and has the higher ranked hand then the player loses both wagers. If the dealer qualifies and both hands are of the same rank, then both wagers push. If the dealer qualifies and the player has the higher ranked hand, then the player is paid even money on the ante wager and the second wager is paid according to a payout table.

The optimum strategy in Caribbean Stud Poker is as follows. If the player does not have the dealer’s qualifying hand then he must fold. Because if the dealer does not qualify he will win only on the ante wager, but if the dealer qualifies then he will lose both wagers. If the player holds two pairs or higher then he must always raise. The slightly complicated hand rankings are one pair and ace king or better.

In the one pair hand ranking, when the rank of the pair is greater than the rank of the dealer’s face up card then in the long run the player will win. Hence in this case the player must raise. However, when the rank of the pair is less than that of the dealer’s face up card then in the long run the player will lose. If there was no ante wager placed then the correct strategy would be to fold. In the actual game, folding results in the loss of the ante wager. When this is factored into the mathematics, the player will minimize his loss by raising. Hence in the one pair case the player should always raise.

When the player holds ace king or better the dealer’s face up card comes into play in determining the optimum Caribbean Stud Poker strategy. The player must raise in any of the following three conditions. The first condition is that the dealer’s face up card is a two through queen and matches one of the player’s cards. The second condition is that the dealer’s face up card is an ace or king and the player has a queen or jack in his hand. The third condition is that the dealer’s rank does not match any of the player’s cards and the player has a queen and the dealer’s card is less than the player’s fourth highest card. In all other cases the player must fold.
