Online Casino Video Poker

July 26, 2012

Video poker is an ideal game for online casinos. Even at land casinos it is played on computer consoles and therefore it takes naturally to computer screens. Most online casinos offer a separate section for video poker in their games menu, where a number of different video poker variants are listed. Though these games differ in detail, the basic structure is the same.

At the core of the online video poker game is the payout table that determines when and how much the player has won. The payout table lists a number of poker hand rankings. The lower ranked poker hands pay out less and the higher ranked poker hands pay out more. The exact payouts are listed next to the hand rankings. Online video poker games allow players to wager from one coin to five coins. Therefore there are five sets of payouts against the hand rankings. For all hand rankings the payouts are in proportion to the number of coins wagered. But in the case of royal flush with five coins wagered the payout is greater than in proportion. Therefore it is prudent to play online video poker with five coins wagered.

The game play of online video poker is as follows. The player first selects the coin size and the number of coins. The relevant column of the payout table gets highlighted. The player then clicks the Deal button and is dealt five cards face up. The player can hold as many of these cards as he wants to. He may even not hold any or may even hold all five cards. This is the most crucial part of the game. The choice is skill based and should give the player the chance to win the maximum amount. There is a definite optimum strategy involved in the selection. If players are skilled in online video poker and follow the optimum strategy they can expect average returns in excess of 99%. Players who are not aware of the optimum strategy are likely to lose most of the time. Some online video poker software providers help players by indicating which cards should be held.

After the players mark the cards they want to hold they are required to click the Draw button. The remaining cards are then replaced and the player is left with a final five card video poker hand. This hand is compared with the payout table. If the ranking of this hand features in the payout table then the player receives the corresponding payout. Most software providers offer a Double option after every payout. The player can attempt to double the payout in a zero house edge gamble game. But if the player loses then the payout earned in the video poker game is forfeited. Software providers make their video poker section interesting through different variants and formats. Some variants include wild cards that substitute for other cards to complete the highest possible poker hand. In such video poker variants the payouts start with higher hand rankings. The multi hand video poker format is also fairly common. Players can wager on a number of hands simultaneously that in some cases go up to 100. The base hand is dealt first. The cards held by the player in that hand are automatically transferred to all other hands. Then remaining cards are then independently dealt for each hand and each hand is independently compared with the payout table.
